Show a Latke Love to These NYC Businesses this Chanukah

If you haven't heard already, as of this Monday, NYC restaurants are no longer allowed to host diners indoors. The news is a threatening blow to restaurants who depend on diners to keep afloat. Monday also marks the 4th day/5th night of Chanukah, a holiday with many an unhealthy, indulgent and totally delicious fried treat, from latkes to sufganiyot (doughnuts). So in the spirit of helping NYC's dining scene out—while also indulging in some holiday treats—here are some places in the city serving up some truly delicious Chanukah treats for takeaway.

Their Chanukah pre-order prices are a bit steep, requiring a minimum purchase number in order to place an order ahead of time, but you can stop in and pick-up one of their decadent and delicious latkes in-store. They've got the usual toppings like applesauce and tofu sour cream (in true kosher-style of not mixing dairy with meat), but the real fun is found in the "Instant Heart Attack Sandwich", a blend of meats that are surrounded by latkes instead of bread! And for dessert, be sure to snag some mini jelly doughnuts.

This downtown staple is know for their pierogies, but they also make a mean latke! Their Chanukah special offers packs of 6 or twelve latkes along with options for Matzoh Ball soup for twelve—the Jewish penicillin we could all probably use more of in our diets right about now.

12 Chairs has 2 locations (one in BK and one in Manhattan), and both are GOLD when you're looking for a good time with great food. They have latkes available at both locations with two large-scale options: topping with bacon, egg and maple syrup, or lox and cream cheese. They've also got a sweet potato latke option, and are one of the only—if not the only—places I've seen that plans to light candles with guests at 6pm every night.

In an interesting twist, this seafood staple is serving up some old-fashioned latkes in fun new ways. Their Latkes Four Ways comes with smoked salmon & cream cheese, smoked trout with sour cream & trout roe, whipped egg & red cabbage, and short rib & pickled onion. If you're feeling a little less adventurous, you can also buy them in bulk (packs come in 6, 12 or 24) with house-made applesauce and sour cream, but hurry because they're only available between now and Dec. 18.

This newcomer is hitting the ground running, offering a catering menu for all eight days of Chanukah. Choose from latkes with applesauce and sour cream, Jewish staples like matzoh ball soup and brisket, and even freshly baked jelly donuts!

Another well-known kosher-style establishment, I couldn't skip a mention of Russ and Daughters and their amazing fare. They've got a ton of package deals, including their Chanukah Essentials, including 12 potato latkes, with toppings like applesauce, creme fraiche, Scottish smoked salmon, and even a box of menorah candles and Gelt (chocolate in the shape of coins that are usually the currency for betting during a game of dreidel).

What's savory without its sweet counterpart? Lucky number 7, Breads is always a fun place to turn when you're looking for a traditional dessert, occasionally made with a fun or interesting twist. While they also have latkes on tap, the real star is their doughnuts. Their sufganiyot flavors include a choice of local strawberry jam, chocolate with Nutella, coffee-infused custard and caramel. Might as well throw some of their incredible babka into your order too while you're at it.

I had to give a specific shoutout to at least one doughnut place. Though I'm not a big doughnut person myself, Doughnut Plant is one of my favorite specialty spots in NYC because they're always collaborating and innovating. Their "Hannukah Sufganiyot" options include a hugeeeee menorah-shaped ripple (four rings with a cream cheese glaze, two filled with housemade blackberry jam) or a box of their classic doughseed, filled with housemade blackberry jam and glazed with either vanilla bean or marzipan.

Of course, this list only scratches the surface of all the NYC businesses that are continuing to create great specials and daily deliciousness for us to enjoy. In the spirit of the season and in service of your tastebuds, make sure to show some love to these and others who need our orders more than ever!
